Badminton Introduces Exciting 3x15 Scoring System Starting in 2027

Badminton's world governing body has made a significant change by voting to alter the sport's scoring system, marking what they call "an important milestone for the future of badminton." Starting from 4 January 2027, matches will shift from the traditional best-of-three games format, where players aim for 21 points per game, to a new structure where each game is played to 15 points. The Badminton World Federation (BWF) asserts that this new 3x15 scoring system will lead to: Tighter, more exciting games Reduced player fatigue Lowered risk of injuries This decision was reached during the BWF's annual general meeting in Denmark, following extensive testing and analysis of five different scoring systems. BWF President Khunying Patama Leeswadtrakul emphasized the need to adapt the sport for future generations, stating, "We are building a sport that speaks to the next generation, while continuing to invest in the long term future of our players." Leeswadtrakul added that the new system aims to enhance competitive play, improve scheduling, and provide consistent match durations, all while considering player welfare and recovery. Despite some reservations from stakeholders regarding the change, the BWF remains confident that the essence of badminton—its skill, tactics, physical and mental demands, and inherent drama—will remain intact.
