Arrests Made as Police Clear Indigenous Protest at Future Olympic Stadium Site

Australian police have arrested five people while clearing a protest camp from a city park designated for the main stadium of the 2032 Olympic Games. Environmentalists and Indigenous activists received warnings from the Queensland state government to vacate the site, which is set to be closed off for five years starting next week. The Games Independent Infrastructure and Coordination Authority (GIICA) will take control of the Brisbane park at midnight on Monday, initiating work on the 63,000-seat arena, the centerpiece of Australia's third Olympics. Despite this development, Indigenous groups have outstanding applications to the Australian government, seeking to protect the park as a "significant Aboriginal area." Known as Barrambin ("Windy Place") to the Yagara people, the site features numerous old-growth trees and holds cultural and spiritual significance. The Goori Camp Embassy had maintained a ceremonial campfire for over 60 days within the park, planning non-violent resistance to the clearance. On Friday morning, approximately 40 police officers surprised campaigners, making two arrests before allowing other protesters a couple of hours to disperse. Following the deadline, scuffles ensued, resulting in three more arrests as tents were dismantled. Indigenous activists aimed to delay construction until their application to the federal government was addressed, intending to keep the fire alight. In 2025, the state government exempted the park from heritage, environmental, and planning laws, paving the way for the stadium and a new aquatics centre, which will be built on the site of the Centenary Pool. In a joint statement, the state government and Brisbane City Council emphasized the park's transformation into a "world-class destination" with ample open space. They acknowledged the right to peaceful protest but stated that the camp had become a safety issue, reiterating that it would be unsafe for individuals to remain once the site became an active construction zone.
