Former Arsenal goalkeeper Alex Manninger has tragically lost his life in a road accident, as confirmed by his first club, Red Bull Salzburg. He was just 48 years old. Manninger played a pivotal role in helping Arsenal secure the Premier League and FA Cup double in the 1997/98 season. He stepped in for David Seaman, making seven notable appearances in the league and famously saving a penalty during the FA Cup semi-final shootout against West Ham. Throughout his career, he made a total of 64 appearances for the Gunners from 1997 to 2002. His journey also included stints in Serie A with clubs like Fiorentina, Siena, and Juventus, as well as playing in the Austrian Bundesliga and the German Bundesliga with FC Augsburg. He concluded his playing career at Liverpool, although he did not make any appearances there. In a heartfelt statement, Arsenal expressed their shock and sadness at Manninger’s passing, extending condolences to his family and loved ones during this difficult time. Manninger also represented Austria, earning 33 caps and being part of the squad for the 2008 Euros, co-hosted by Austria and Switzerland.
