76ers Move On from Daryl Morey, Retain Nick Nurse for Fourth Season

The Philadelphia 76ers are seeking a new president of basketball operations after parting ways with Daryl Morey on Tuesday. Alongside this change, Nick Nurse will continue as head coach for a fourth season, as reported by ESPN. Morey’s tenure lasted six seasons, during which the 76ers reached the postseason five times but failed to progress beyond the second round. This past season, the team finished with a 45-37 record, securing the No. 7 seed. They triumphed over the Orlando Magic in the Play-In Tournament and defeated the Boston Celtics in the first round after overcoming a 3-1 deficit. However, their playoff run ended with a sweep by the New York Knicks, leading to Morey's departure. Team owner Josh Harris expressed gratitude for Morey’s contributions, stating, "I have a tremendous amount of respect for Daryl personally and professionally. After speaking with Daryl, we determined that it was time for a fresh start." During his time, Morey made significant moves, including trading Ben Simmons for James Harden and later dealing Harden to the Los Angeles Clippers. He also signed Paul George to a max deal in 2024 and brought in Doc Rivers before hiring Nurse. Despite these efforts, the 76ers struggled with injuries to Joel Embiid, the 2023 MVP, limiting his playtime over the last three seasons. Harris acknowledged the fans' frustrations, stating, "We have fallen well short of our own expectations... That bothers me deeply." The new president will need to build around Embiid, George, and a promising backcourt featuring All-Star Tyrese Maxey and VJ Edgecombe, who finished third in Rookie of the Year voting. Bob Myers, currently the president of sports at Harris Blitzer Sports & Entertainment, will oversee the search for Morey’s replacement and manage the basketball department in the meantime. Myers, who has a proven track record with the Golden State Warriors, emphasized the importance of finding the right leader to shape the team's future.
